I Don't Understand the Mentality

I recently watched a show called Dream Home( I think). A young, obviously wealthy couple from NYC bought land in upstate NY.  They put up "No Trespassing" signs, meet the neighbor, etc, then go home. A few days later the neighbor calls and leaves a threatening message. Returning to the land, they see the signs are gone, and the whackadoodle  neighbor is engaging them in a physical fight. These two people are horrified and petrified.  The lady wonders what type of world they're moving to. They end up buying more land elsewhere in NY, only to have someone steal their timber, while their contractors lie and cheat. The whole time, I'm thinking, "OMG. I know exactly what they feel like."
We've had no trouble with businesses up here( for example- Dansville Water Wells is a quality company) but some of the people leave me wondering. We're trying to decide what to do with land we have in a nearby county. Yesterday, we visited a realtor. If the economy is so bad, then I wonder why these 2 women were so uninterested in making a few thousand dollars. They could barely tear their eyes away from the newspaper to even say hello. They told us 3 times they'd never heard of the road (or the nearby roads) the land is on. Fine, you twits, have you ever heard of Google maps? They said they "couldn't ever" understand deeds, what with all the old timey words.  I think we both realized what nincompoops they were, so we left as quickly as possible. Driving by to look at the land, we saw, again, 4 wheeler tracks entering the property on a very well traveled path that traverses the entire propeerty. So while we've been making payments, people have been playing on it. Four wheeling, driving, cutting trees, hunting, and even camping. There's a rotten shack on it, and someone took the old propane heater/cook stove from it. I wouldn't be surprised if the rock walls and old basement stones will all be stolen and sold. NO ONE  has permission to be there. I'm not anti-hunting, but I am allowed to say if I want animals on our property to be shot. What makes people think they are exempt from it all? Tresspassing signs don't work, we're not close enough to sit and watch for them, and they'd probably steal any cameras we'd put up. I'm hoping we can get it straightened out and sold in the near future.

  1. How frustrating! Have the thugs all moved to the country? No need to fear terrorist cells when local criminals run rampant. Hopefully you can find a "real" realtor. I suppose you have considered whether your son would want the property some day. It's lovely.

    1. Sadly, he's a city boy with dreams of living somewhere in a loft(with no yard-work), riding a subway, and only going to the country to race his Camaro(someday) on the winding roads.
