I love this book, but can't understand why I've never heard of it before.  My favorite line:
"....when Mom made me a dress that I would have rather eaten hominy than wear..."
It brings back memories of me as a kid, running  in to the house and asking about supper, and then having that god-awful smell of hominy hit me.
